Diamanter + carat = vad är det?

Carat measures weight, not size. A metric carat is defined as 200 milligrams. Each carat is subdivided into 100 points, allowing for measurement to the hundredth decimal place. Carat weight can be measured to the thousandth decimal place for rounding purposes.

The term carat weight comes from carob seeds and has been in use since the 1500s. Early gem traders used to use small uniform seeds to counterweight their scales. Today a carat is a standard milligram measurement of weight, recognized and used globally.

Certain carat weights are considered to be magic sizes for their desirability – 1.00 carat, 1.50 carats, and 2.00 carats. Although it is difficult to visually distinguish a 0.99 carat diamond from a 1.00 carat, the price difference can be significant.

Diamanter med vacker gnistra

Vacker gnista är resultatet av en väl utformad diamantslipning. I själva verket kan en diamant med hög caratvikt med en dålig slipning se mindre ut än en diamant med en mindre caratvikt och mycket bra slipning.

Termen carat missförstås ofta. Det hänvisar till en diamants vikt, inte till dess storlek. En annan missuppfattning är att en större caratvikt alltid är bättre än en mindre caratvikt. Även om det är sant att en stor sten kan vara en statussymbol, är caratvikt inte relaterat till gnistan. 

Observera att en diamants carat inte ska förväxlas med karat i guld.

Handla smart för att maximera budgeten

Satsa på slipningen

Diamantslipningen är den viktigaste faktorn eftersom den maximerar gnistan. Till och med en stor diamant med en fin färg och klarhet kan verka livlös och tråkig om slipningen är dålig.

Olika former ger olika pris

Andra diamantformer än rund kostar mindre per carat. De kan dessutom se större ut än deras faktiska vikt i diamantcarat, speciellt när de placeras i en halo-ring.

Diamanten kan se olika stor ut på olika fingrar

Tänk på ringstorleken. Ju mindre finger desto större kommer diamanten att se ut. En solitärring med diamant på 1 carat diamant ser exempelvis större ut på ett finger i storlek 50 än på ett finger i storlek 56.

När man bestämmer priset på en diamantring, är det inte enbart caratvikten som ska vara i fokus. När det gäller diamanter, är större definitivt inte alltid bättre. Fokusera istället på en balans mellan diamantens slipning, klarhet, färg och carat för att göra ett smart köp.
